A contraluz in Spanish means literally "against the light"; against the old school rule to “never shoot into the light".
That was then.
Advances in sensors and lens design now allow photographers to take backlit pictures against bright lighting without overhwelming the sensor or much ghosting and flaring inside the lenses giving us highly contrasted, saturated and sometimes unusual photographs.
